Sunland Gets Green Light for New Palm Beach Towers

Less than a week after lodging an application for a 44-storey residential tower on the Gold Coast, developer Sunland Group has received approval from the Gold Coast City Council to develop a new twin tower residential development at Palm Beach.   

Sunland’s Magnoli Apartments — which were originally submitted to the Gold Coast Council for approval in late 2016 — occupies the site of a former 1.3 hectare caravan park located on the corner of Gold Coast Highway and Nineteenth Avenue.

The proposal for Magnoli Apartments was unanimously approved by Gold Coast Council’s planning committee and will go to full council on Tuesday 14 November for final approval.

The Palm Beach proposal comprises a 2,250sq m community park, two 12-storey apartment buildings, and six architectural terrace homes.

Sunland Group managing director, Sahba Abedian, said the proposed development is the outcome of extensive consultation between the Gold Coast City Council and Sunland.

“The site is located directly opposite the 19th avenue apartment project, which at 17-storeys is the tallest building in Palm Beach,” Abedian said.

“Our vision for Magnoli Apartments is to integrate two boutique apartment buildings within the site, featuring generous landscaped setbacks from the Gold Coast Highway and Brooke Avenue, a large community park, and 380sq m of retail/commercial space.

“The mid-rise apartment buildings will feature expansive vertical planting along the corridors and balconies, creating the effect of a cascading urban garden and adding landscape to the façade,” Abedian said.

During the application process Sunland, in consultation with the Gold Coast City Council, changed the location of the proposed park and Abedian believes the new park design will be safer and more accessible than the previously approved park, which was sloping and narrow and accessible only from Nineteenth Avenue.

In total the proposed project covers less than 25 per cent of the total site area and all car parking will be hidden in the two basement levels.

Pending statutory approvals, Sunland Group intends to launch the project in 2018.
